KINDS OF TEST
1.      PROFICIENCY TEST
PROFICIENCY TESTS ARE DESIGNED TO MEASURE PEOPLE’S ABILITY IN THE LANGUAGE REGARDLESS OF ANY TRAINING
A TEST THAT INDICATES WHAT IS A PERSON CAPABLE OF DOING 


2.      ACHIEVEMENT TESTS
          TO ESTABLISH HOW SUCCESSFUL INDIVIDUAL STUDENT, GROUP OF STUDENTS, OR COURSE ITSELF HAVE BEEN ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES
          A TEST THAT INDICATES Ss MASTERY AFTER FOLLOWING FORMAL LEARNING
ACHIEVEMENT TEST ARE DIVIDED INTO:
a.       FINAL ACHIEVEMENT TEST = SUMMATIVE TEST
            ADMINISTERED AT THE END OF THE COURSE/STUDY
            E.G.: SEMESTER TEST
b.      PROGRESS ACHIEVEMENT TEST = FORMATIVE TEST
            INTENDED TO MEASURE THE PROGRESS THAT THE SS ARE MAKING
            E.G.: QUIZES
3. DIAGNOSTIC TESTS    
          A TEST TO IDENTIFY INDIVIDUAL’S STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES
          THEY ARE INTENDED PRIMARILY TO ASCERTAIN WHAT FURTHER TEACHING IS NECESSARY
          THERE WILL BE REMEDIAL TEACHING
3.      PLACEMENT TESTS
4.      INTENDED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION WHICH HELP TO PLACE Ss AT THE STAGE OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM MOST APPROPRIATE TO THEIR ABILITY
5.      A TEST THAT IS USED TO CLASSIFY INDIVIDUAL IN APPROPRIATE CLASSES
6.      APTITUDE TEST
A TEST THAT INDICATES INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL FOR ACQUIRING SPECIFIC SKILL AND LEARNING

DIRECT VS INDIRECT TESTING
          DIRECT TESTING :
            A TESTING IN WHICH THE CANDIDATE SHOULD PERFORM THE SKILL THAT IS GOING TO BE MEASURED
            E.G.: IF WE WANT TO KNOW Ss PRONUNCIATION ABILITY, ASK HIM TO SPEAK
          INDIRECT TESTING
            A TESTING WHICH MEASURE THE ABILITY WHICH UNDERLIE THE SKILL THAT WE MEASURE
            E.G.: IF WE WANT TO KNOW Ss PRONUNCIATION ABILITY, GIVE HIM WRITTEN TEST IN WHICH HE NEEDS TO IDENTIFY SOUNDS

Discrete point testing vs integrative testing
          DISCRETE POINT TESTING
            A TESTING IN WHICH ONE ELEMENT IS TESTED AT ONE TIME
            E.G.: PARTICULAR GRAMMAR STRUCTURE
          INTEGRATIVE TESTING
            A TESTING IN WHICH MANY ELEMENTS/ SKILLS ARE TESTED AT ONE TIME. IT REQUIRES THE CANDIDATE TO COMBINE MANY LANGUAGE ELEMENTS IN THE COMPLETION OF THE TEST

Norm referenced testing vs criterion referenced testing
          NORM REFERENCED TESTING
            A TESTING IN WHICH A STUDENT PERFORMANCE RELATE WITH OR DEPENDS ON OTHER Ss PERFORMANCE
          CRITERION REFERENCED TESTING
            A TESTING IN WHICH A STUDENT PERFORMANCE DEPENDS ON HIS MASTERY LEVEL/ HOW WELL HE MASTER THE MATERIAL

OBJECTIVE TESTING VS SUBJECTIVE TESTING
          OBJECTIVE TESTING:
ü   A TESTING IN WHICH THE Ss SCORES ARE SIMILAR NO MATTER WHO SCORES THE TEST
ü   A TESTING IN WHICH THERE IS ONLY ONE CORRECT ANSWER FOR EACH ITEM
       SUBJECTIVE TESTING:
ü  A TESTING IN WHICH A SsSCORES DEPEND ON/ ARE INFLUENCED BY TEACHER JUDGEMENT
ü  USUALLY IT DEALS WITH THE TEST THAT REQUIRES FREE RESPONSE
